It's just that so many of us are enablers....oh, and did I mention that I came home the other day with 8 sex-link roos? They are "supposed" to be for my brother's freezer...I better not name them unless it is something like "KFC", "Nugget" or "Dumpling"

Zany, the simplest solution for introducing the single gold comet chick is to pick up 2-3 chicks at a feed store on the way home with her. Much easier introducing 3 instead of 1. Chicken math strikes again!

I actually considered getting at least one more

, but don't know if the feed store has any that age. Also, my coop that is not done yet (painted most of the day today) is only 4 x 6, not sure how many I can have without overcrowding. While my stepfather who is helping it seems to understand this isn't THE chicken coop we are building, it is THE FIRST, it is the only one this year!

I had a single "non-specific breed" chick hatch in an incubator, so I bought two Salmon Favs at the feed store to keep it company. Then I happened to be in the feed store again a few day later, when chicks are delivered, and there were Delaware chicks! So I bought 3 Delaware pullet chicks.

Ummmmm..... I have 27 older chicks in a ginormous brooder in the coop, 3 ducklings in a brooder in the house, and about 50 other chickens ranging freely in the yard. Plus four - yes, FOUR! - broody hens right now.

I needed to buy 5 chicks like I needed to grow another nose.

So, the Golden comet I rescued is so pretty I have her separayed from the other 3 I mean 9. The other girl had a barred rock she is raising Now I'm starting to get upset that I didn't end up with any barred rocK. I am so tempted to call the feed store. I'm still painting the pieces of my coop, the frame is built and we should be able to put it all together next Sunday. Nobody answered my question about how many chickens I can put in my 4 x 6 coop. I'm still pretty sure that I have 4 males and will be getting rid of at least 3. Not sure yet whether I am keeping the 4th or not. My husband refuses to let me use the 10 or 12 x 30 foot shed we have as A chicken barn :( he did tell me I could get some cornish rock if I was going to process them. Not sure where he thinks that I will put them though.

I do not know for certain what a good number is for a 4x6' coop would be. I have 13 chickens in a 7x9' portion of my coop. This does not include their nest boxes. What I found very helpful for grumpy hens at roosting time was to have one main 7' long roost then short sections off of it. The dominant birds claim these short sections every night. Their roo takes the spot closest to the chicken door, he is ready to drop on top anything that tries to get in that way. This is sort of how the roost looks from above, ___l___l___l___l___l___ Screwing things together in the coop rather than using nails has made it much easier to rearrange the layout over the years.
