My Coop
My Coop
So here it is. I've been busy modifying altering and improving my coops and run. I've never really measured exactly what space I'm using. I do try to give them as much as possible but I'm working within the limitations of my garden.
I have two coops between 15 hens one is 4x4' with 3 nest boxes and two 4' perches the other is 4x6' which is a bit more open plan with two 4x1' open nest boxes. This is my next project to put more perches and closed nest boxes. Both coops open into a covered run that is 126 sq'.

This gives 10 1/2sq' per bird including the coop and about 8' without.
This in turn opens into a main outside run that that is approx 625 sq'. It is no less than that.

My third coop is separate. There is six hens in here. It is raised off the ground and measures 5 1/2' x 12' giving 66sq' with an outside open run 7'x5 1/5' giving an extra 38 1/2'. The coop is raised and is 3 1/2'x5 1/2'. Just over 19 sq'. This gives just under 11sq' not including outside and coop. Including outside they have 17 1/2sq'

This did my head in abit working it out but it is as accurate as possible. All measurements are in feet. I am working to replace the two coops at the top with a larger single shed but that will be a summer job! Have my birds got enough space?

haha! yeah i have 5 barred rocks and 5 partridge ones, a bb red bantam and a sebright. the sebright will actually sit on top of one of the barred rocks. they look like they will be stuck for ever:lol:
This is what I just found!

A Brahma and a bluebell! The two biggest birds I have!!

If your runs are not totally predator proof, you can't really count run space.
Minimum space is oft cited at 4sqft per bird in coop, 10sqft per bird in run,
so 14sqft per bird if run is pred proof and coop is always open,
and 12" of roost length per bird,
