Chicken Math

Pics
My personal chicken math when I first got my very first hens...
Trip to feed store for cat food = 4 chicks and a bag of cat food and a bag of chick feed.. followed by a quick trip to the local big box diy to get 'something' for a small coop.. = several hours on the net learning how to build a chicken coop. Nice coop but my husband noted that it could easily hold 8 chickens.. 1 day later hubby shows up with 4 more chicks. Now we have 8 chicks, need a run for them, lots of chicken wire.. oops chicken wire is too weak to keep out predators.. Oh hey we needed to fence that west field anyway.. now we're in for 12 heavy fence posts, some strong wire, built two good gates, lots of hardware, oh and ooh look Buff Orpington chicks... and what's a Plymouth barred Rock? Uh 12 chickens... Uh oh too many of them are crowing, oh whew, a neighbor down the road doesn't mind roosters and will take all 3.. Hubby notices "Hey we can get a few more now that your down 3"... Uh but hun, 6 more chicks is too many for the coop.. Need a new extra coop do you? Let's build a chicken tractor! Hubby gets busy.... Now we need more shelter... Oh well, I like the back covered chicken patio whatzit he built.
I'm not sure but I think my chicken math is on an infinite path now or something, kind of like trying to calculate pi.
I LIKE your husband! I had to wait till mine went out of state, I'm now up 6 silkies! Woot woot. Awww little one is really attached to her older sissy baby Brahma pullet, we are now up one more! I believe let me see 5 + 4 + 6= not enough :gig

This all began this spring. I decided to get back into chickens so I built a chicken tractor and run for 8 chickens. Bought +8 speckled Sussex, -3 arrived dead, still want at least eight so I buy +4 white Leghorns, one ends up being a rooster, CRAP!, had to rescue +1 Jersey Giant, +1 Campine, +1 Leghorn, +1 Barred Rock, my run wasn’t ready yet but would be in about two days, I thought they’d be OK for two days, wrong. Two dogs broke into the run and killed my -1 Campine, -2 SS, went to the feed store bought +1 Production Blue and +1 Easter Egger, decided now my tractor is too small and began to convert a 10x10 tool shed to a coop. Hmm, too much space, I could use some more chickens. Bought +3 French black copper Marans, +3 EEs, decided I really like EEs and if I get an EE rooster I could make Olive Eggers with my FBCM and EEs so I bought +7 EE pullets and +1 EE cockerel, -2 sick EE chicks died so I buy +2 more EE chicks. That is 22 total I think. I will soon have three separate coops to house the chickens plus room for a few more.
That’s chicken math! :D And, if my daughters don’t start using their trampoline soon, I’m already thinking how to convert that to a coop.

Check out the coop pages here on BYC - I know there's at least one trampoline coop/run in there, somewhere!

I tried to add/subtract all of them. I think you have 27 pullets/hens and 2 cockerels/roosters unless you didn't keep the white leghorn rooster.

This year I wasn't getting anymore but I couldn't resist those cute little fuzzballs.
First week got 6 - 2 Jersey Giants, 2 E.E.'s and 2 silver-laced Wyandottes. Week 2 got 4 - 3 Golden-laced Wyandottes and another Silver-laced Wyandotte.
Week 3 got 3 Cuckoo Marans.
Week 4 got 7 - 6 E.E.'s and 1 more Cuckoo Marans.
Week 5 got 3 - 2 Partridge Rocks and 1 Welsummer.
Week 6 found myself getting 3 buff Brahmas with pasty butt for 1/2 price.
Then while away in late April, neighbor missed 3 duck eggs in the pen that were in direct sun for up to 4 days and we decided to try to hatch them with a broody hen. Add a Showgirl egg to the duck eggs as well. Accidents happen and lost the Showgirl and a duck egg 5 days before due to hatch. Other 2 duck eggs hatched but lost 1 on day 2. Had to get him a roommate so we got 2 from TSC and I've got a bad feeling all 3 ducklings are drakes. Sadly I lost 1 E.E. at 14 weeks, unknown why. Lost my only single comb silver-laced Wyandotte at 18 weeks, she somehow flew into my bully-boxer-lab mix pen - no marks but I think he ran her. And sadly 1 of my 2 buff Brahma cockerels was found dead Sunday afternoon - we'd been away over the weekend and a neighbor was collecting eggs for us. I would have never seen him except I was looking for duck eggs - they tend to lay everywhere. He was under the "youngins" coop with an older hen watching over him. My Showgirl is almost 5 years old and laying once again, I'd love to try and hatch a few of her eggs again (all 3 of her eggs failed to be fertile in July). No one is broody and I prefer not using an incubator (don't own one either). So I went from not wanting any more to buying 27 chicks and 2 ducklings plus had 1 duckling hatch and survive. So that's 22 pullets, 1 cockerel and 3 ducklings for this year (so far) plus I have 6 standard roosters, 33 standard hens, 1 Showgirl bantam, 3 khaki Campbell's ducks - 2 hens and 1 drake - 69 in all for now. Yep, that's chicken math for ya.
