Was never entirely sure of chicken math untl today. It works like this;
3-1 =4

I bought 3 babies and last week a snake ate one leaving 2. Today I bought two bringing the total to 4.
Makes sense to me. Still unhappy about the snake. The babies live in the bathroom and I put them out for 15 minutes in the closed coop. So sad.

Single digit numbers are just the beginning. soon you'll be using double digit numbers but you're getting the gist of it! Sorry about the snake thing. Do you know what kind of snake?

I kind of know how you feel. I bought two RIR's, took them home and had them in a large cardboard box in my computer room. About a half hour later I realized that my dog wasn't at my feet as I expected her to be so I got up and went to the computer room, and the box was empty.

I went back the next day and bought two more RIR's, and they went into a large bird cage I had. After a week I decided that I should have more birds, so I went back to the Feed store and bought seven more. That was the last of the baby chicks they had that day, so I brought them home.

Next I built a large(ish) brooder box, four feet long by two feet wide, and 18 inches tall. Nine birds was just right until I built the chicken tractor.

Then I bought ten more when the original nine birds were just old enough to be moved outside. And since I had no roosters, I decided to get two roosters when the second batch were just a week old. The were accepted perfectly.

I have had this second batch now for five (and four) weeks. The second tractor is well on it's way to completion, and in a few weeks these birds are going to be moved outside too.

So ... two birds, plus two birds plus seven birds, plus ten birds plus two birds ...

It was a black snake about 6 ft long. My neighbor relocated it but I am waiting for it to come back. I have created a nursery outside the back door. My 90 lb dog loves baby animals and hopefully will watch over them when I am not right there.
