Chicken math

Last year, I wanted a few chickens for eggs. Now I have in my egg laying flock, 25 layers, 3 roosters, 1 momma hen with 7 chicks, 13 boys heading to freezer camp. Then 2 4H showmanship chickens. My exhibition flock 2 roosters, 9 hens, 4 pullets. My daughters exhibition trio. Plus waiting on my brahmas to begin laying so I can hatch more chicks.

I can already see chicken math working it's magic on me, and I haven't even gotten any chickens yet!

So I decided, 4 is a good number of chickens, that will be my little flock. I started putting together a collage by googling pictures of different breeds that I think are really pretty, and I'm finding that 4 is just not enough!! I need an Ayam Cemani, a blue/splash Ameraucana, a Cream Legbar, Rhode Island Red, Barred Plymouth Rock and a Buff Orpington to sort of round it out. That's already 6.. I really need another patterned hen too, maybe a Blue Laced Red Wyandotte!

Okay, I just need all the hens in ALL the colors!

Then you will need all the hens that lay different colored eggs like mine.:p

Indeed! Well blue is my favorite color and that's why I included Cream Legbar! Also the Ameraucana, so yay blue eggs!

We started with 14 2 years ago as our first flock. Even that seemed like too many. I now have 29 outside (plus 7 turkeys), 8 chicks in the garage brooder, 8 in a screen porch brooder, 10 poults in the bedroom brooder and 17 BCM chicks in the bedroom brooder. I needed to replenish my BCM stock, I wanted a couple silkies, I HAD to breed my turkeys since they started laying and this is my first year with them. Oh and I'm picking up a few cochin chicks next month since my hubby loves them plus a bunch of CCL eggs to hatch out. I'm thinking this cabinet incubator is dangerous in my possession lol

Will be 2 years in chicken keeping by April 2016, am on my 3rd batch of new chicks (15 just arrived from Cincinnati). 10 the first spring 10 more the following to 35 all together today

New adventures in chicken math! I have expanded as of today into turkey math! +2 :D Now that my 22 layers are all producing nicely, I figured it's time to add another angle. Picking up 6 Cornish cross tomorrow as a test run for meat birds, although I'm sending my wife to pick them up so she may see other cute chicks that she wants (which I'm encouraging lol).
Current total: 26 birds
Projected total tomorrow: 32+
