Chicken math

Welcome to the club!

I think we were going to do 10 to 12 for meat and eggs, 3 years ago.  :idunno :lau
Now $100's in and 100's of birds later, I am moving my flock towards uber rare breeds and I love it!
I just picked up 21 at the po from Ideal Poultry. I went to Livestock Conservatory and found that many Heritage Breeds are endangered so I had to have some Red Caps, Delawares, Yokohamas, and Crevecours. Added to my 6 Ameracaunas that makes 26! Of course ws soon as I get the pen up I am ordering broilers for eating so there are no brakes on the runaway train!

My son wanted to build me a chicken coop, so for his senior project, he researched chicken farming and was incredibly disgusted. He built the coop, wrote the paper and gave the presentation and got an A. I got a wonderful new hobby. We started with 4. Then I had to have Ameraucanas. I got 3 from a breeder. On and on until I was up to 12. I have the original coop we call the summer coop since it is very open. I converted a 10 x 10 shed into a coop with windows, a people door and roosts made out of branches from cutting down the laurel hedge. They have a 20 x 60 yard. So...two turned out to be roosters. I got rid of 1 and had to replace him but you can't just buy one baby, so I bought 2. This year the roo attacked me so off he went and I got 2 more. My son was worried that one was a roo, so today I have to get another one. Heh, heh.

My other half is a die hard flyfisherman. He has a fly tying bench in the basement, subscriptions to God knows how many fly fishing magazines, spends literally thousands a dollars a year on his hobby, and of course, lots of time standing in a river. We have recently come to a mutually beneficial agreement in which I don't give him any crap about his hobby, and he doesn't give me any crap about mine! So, chickens, chickens, chickens!

Same with my husband and his hobbies : fishing, waterfowl hunting, and building trucks. The last one especially costs way more than my chickens. Even fishing isn't cheap since he has a boat to fuel and sometimes goes offshore fishing with some of his friends.

Today I went to TSC. They didn't have much left from their chick shipment they got last week, but I brought home 6 Sebrights. Luckily DH was out looking at a 4 wheeler to buy so he never has to know. :)

I am planning to get some Jersey Giants in a couple weeks when the feedstore gets them. Then that's it, I swear! Except any hatching I need to do for my broodies, of course.

I told him that I could have hundreds of chickens for what he's spent on guns lol. That's including new coops too. But I do have 18 now with 6 spitzenhaubens coming next month along with 20 meats birds and I may just have to go to my local feed store pretty soon. Oh well What's a girl gonna do lol

I have 12 chickens coming in April. But I couldn't wait that long, so I just went and bought 6 chicks :lau
ROTHFLMAO! I just left TS and it was all I.could do to walk away from the broilers I want. I just kept saying "you just got 21 chicks yesterday, you just got 21 chicks yesterday". Oh well, tomorrow's another day, as Scarlet said.
