Chicken math

Went to poultry and pet stock auction yesterday and did well I think. Only added 4 ducks. A pair of Pekins and 2 muscovy hens. Total now is 83 chickens, 25 ducks, 4 geese, 3 rabbits. But 72 eggs in the bators, 3 broody chickens on eggs and duck sitting on a nest somewhere( have not found it yet).

You got chicken math, duck math and all other kinds of math. Lol
Mine newest chicken math has been hard to tell. Had a broody that I gave 10 incubator chicks to. One died first couple of days. Put the two she had been sitting on in the bator and they hatched 5 days after the others. One died first night in the brooder so I gave it a try, since my husband didn't want more, to put it with the orher nine babies. Seemed fine the next morning but had died by afternoon. So everything is going well till I have another go broody. My husband is saying "give her golf balls" I said "that's mean, how about we just let her sit on two eggs" He's okay with that. So I am going to have to move her to the broody coop. I will need to move my mom and 9 chicks either to the grow-out or the main coop. There are 9 seven week olds in the grow out and I'm worried about putting them with the big chickens. So mom and babies go to the big coop. It's going very well until 5 of the little babies find a small opening under the fence that leads to the dog pen. Well, my math has now gone the wrong way and I'm distraught. I moved the mom and four remaining babies to the grow out and the 7 week olds to the big coop. They do just fine and I wished I had done that to start with. Well my chicks had been Black Javas. A breed I wanted to raise. Now I only have 4. So I pretty easily talk my hubby, who feels bad for me, into our getting another dozen BJ eggs. Now my other broody can have some BJ babies too. Hoping they all hatch and I can keep them safe and healthy.

We know how hard the math is! We only wanted 8 but had to order 15 minimum. Well, the shipment came in with 17. This year, we went in for 6 but they were buy 12 and get 6 half off. So, we ended up with 12. The hard part now will be trying to integrate them in about 16 weeks.

Two of my chicks turned out to be cockerels. Out they go! But they have to be replaced, right? We have a local poultry shop that sells chicks, but there is a minimum of 3! What am I to do? I guess I will just have to get an extra :). Not the worst case of chicken math, but I thought I should note it.

That's how it starts.....nice and easy like.........then
WHAM
you look up and there are a hundred of them running around.

And no one suspected a thing.
