Chicken math

I've had enough bad luck with shipped eggs! Not sure if I will ship eggs, maybe in a couple of years (who knows!). I still need to get my flock established. I have Lavender Ameraucanas (as well as EE's), Buff Brahmas (soon to aquire blacks), English Orpingtons, and soon to be my pride and joy, Scots Dumpys, to be recived in July!!!.

I too want to get more into genitics. I have a crazy dream to create Dumpy Ameraucanas!!!

Wow. Hadn't even heard of Scot's Dumpy. Had to look them up. The black ones look a lot like the Black Java. Very pretty.
You know, I'm not unintelligent. I was always pretty good at math and I am a Labor and Delivery nurse. But that genetics is kind of hard stuff to figure generation to generation. But I'm going to keep studying on it and maybe a light bulb will go off.

I just found out last night that my chicken math is going the wrong way. The coop that I was building is not in the place to where my landlord/ father in law, will accept it, for whatever reason. I planned on an 11x8 coop, but now it looks like I will only be able to make a 8x4 coop on the side of the house. So that's a 6 chicken difference, for the worse. I guess it could be a good thing for me, since I'm just starting out, but I was hoping for at least 12. Bummer!

I started with one found rooster in July, now have 12 hens, 2 roosters, 17 chicks (better be girls), and 23 more on order to be delivered in June.

Chicken Math.

I'll have to wait until we move to get more now, it seems like. I'll be stuck with about 8 until then. At least I'll have experience when it comes to having an actual flock of my own!!

I promised my neighbors I would get 3 chickens and keep the number low and give them lots of eggs. My plans were tarnished when I saw that Meyer Hatchery can give you an additional free chick if you donate the eggs. 3+1=4

Four chicks arrived at my house and I loved them so much. One little guy didnt make it so I called up the hatchery and they told me that I could in another order with FREE SHIPPING! but there was a minimum of 3 chicks. 4-1+3=6

So, three more chicks were added to my flock. On a fall evening I forgot to close the coop and something got in and killed my favorite pullet. 6-1=5

The neighbors like the eggs! SCORE! I got the opportunity to hatch chicks in my classroom. Why would I hatch chicks and then return them??!?! I think 3 more will be coming home to live with me. But what if some of them are roosters? I am hatching Leghorns and some kind of bantam. It is my understand that you cant tell their gender without vent sexing because of the type of plumage. I should get a few more just to ensure I am keeping hens. 5+4 (or maybe 5)=????

It never stops does it??

We recently got 6 chicks, 3 rir, and 3 barred rocks,on Wednesday from our local southern states. One of our barred rocks didn't make it. My daughter had named her sweet pea. I felt bad so I decided we needed to get another one to replace sweet pea. 6 silkies later we now have 11 chicks. And I have no idea how to tell if they are male or female. But they are all so cute!

I know the hatcheries want I encourage chicken math but "free chicks" that is just not fair.

We live in a neighborhood with great neighbors. We have a nearly 2 acre lot but after my twins graduate high school next year I hope to move to where we can have a lot more land and no immediate neighbors. Then, watch out, chicken math with exponents.
