OKI've got Jerseys, they're great and huge. They're really docile too
I know, there are certain limitsI know in the country chicken maths not a big deal compared to if you live in the city where limitations are placed on bird owners but for city folk I was wondering is it hard to not go over the limits and if so how do you manage to keep neighbors happy
That is what I didIF I lived in the city I would have privacy fencing for my neighbors. I would buy lime so there was never a smell and I would 'borrow' roosters from country friends. Most neighbors object to the noise or the odor. If you only have a roo when you need fertile eggs most of the object able noise is eliminated. Even regularly cleaned pens have odor when wet but lime will reduce the smells significantly. Anyone who takes the time to count your hens needs a gift of eggs!
OK, it is where I liveMy math won't work out so well. 4 chickens ( to start)+ more chickens = 62 angry neighbors + 1 angry wife = 0 houses + 0 family + 4+chickens![]()
Chickens math isn't worth it ...right now...in this neighborhood![]()
OKMost neighbors object because they DON'T have a life or they are too stupid to live.
Case in point. Most of the people around here let their dogs AND kids run wild. What they can't tear up or kill they poop on. They DON'T see a problem with it till i shoot their dogs and press no tresspass charges on their kids. Neibor that lives closest to me thinks nothing of putting 4yipping ankle biters in a cage to small for hamsters. They yap from day light to dark. SO I bought geese and chickens. Geese are EXTREMELY loud. Ran into her in the store and she commented on it. Told her to enjoy it.They were purchased specifically because I was tired of listening to her dogs. Her face was priceless. My point to all this is if people concentrated more on their own backyards and less on their neighbors life would be a lot better. No one else's rights supersede my own.And I for one will NOT go out of my way to accommodate a bitchy neighbor. Quite the opposite actually. I've been here on my 4-1/2 acres of all frontage property for 20 yrs. Haven't had a neighbor make it to 5 yet. People that go out of their way to be nice to OFFENSIVE people are idiots. It just encourages more bad behavior.
Rant over.![]()
OK, thanksSorry to hear @bcAddy . I'm very fortunate! My neighbors LOVE my chickens! Last year we had a few fly over the chain link fence into their yard. I ran over to get them and noticed they were having a party or get together or something. My neighbor came up to me and I quietly apologized for my stray birds and told him I would get them back over to my yard. He said "Nah, they're no problem. Anyways I told them they are my chickens. Just leave them here" LOL! I didn't want to ruin his party, so they stayed there for the day. Came back to the coop that night. This year I have mended the hole in the fence where they were crossing and they don't go over there. My neighbor said he misses them.![]()
@DanielB20 , Welcome to BYC! I love the avatar! Beautiful.

LOLbcAddy, This is tragic! I feel bad for you and to lose your family over chickens is scary to me as I would wonder, "who the he88 did I marry? Still, I admire your determination and fortitude. I see country in your future! How about keeping bees? LOL![]()
OKX2 When they buy the house they should look around and not just at the pretty tree in their own yard. If they don't like birds or dogs living next to me is a bad idea. Not to mention the Harley.....![]()
LOLVrooom vroom!!![]()

WOW, lots of animals in the next yardYes I have one of "those" neighbors. Bought a house and did not realize that there were 5 chicken coops in the next yard. (Fence was chain link) Or that there were at least 50 dogs within earshot.![]()
OH and she gets to be a stay at home mom. Thinking she needs a hobby other than worrying about what is on my side of the now privacy fence.![]()
OKI've been blessed with my neighbors. We all live on 10 acre plots, but they are rectangular and our houses are all within sight of each other. My neighbor on the one side loves my horses and chickens and even commented on liking hearing the rooster crow, when I had one. The other side also has chickens and they love to visit with the horses. All of us have dogs. So, it has been a blessing!![]()
Really, OKThe only good neighbor is one I HAVEN'T
Met![]()

Quote: LOL not all those are in my yard. The fences in this area were all chain link and one could see from their yard many yards down the way. We have large yards in this area and I think almost every home has at least 3 dogs. Within earshot included all the dogs one can hear from all over the hood.
LOL a lot of critters yup we do have that. I did sell 10 chickens.
I am in town but the ordinance states that we can have as many chickens as can be properly housed and cared for without creating a health hazard or nuisance.
32 is not so many......... is it......![]()

OKI think 32 is fine. But I live in the middle of 40 acres of pasture land. If I had neighbors I would have the privacy fence you spoke of. It is too bad you have never had a good neighbor. I have and they are a blessing. Unfortunately there are many more crummy neighbors than there are the ones you have yet to meet.
OKShe's a great mamma!
I've had quite a few broodys since March and it never gets old, love those baby chicks!
OK32 is the absolute minimum! Lol!
That sure is a lot, but OKI'm thinking more along the lines of 50
