Chicken math

I told my husband I would only get 4 or 5, 6 at the most, well that was 11 months ago and since then I have gone totally nuts about the birds! All of their personalities and funny things they do just made me want more and more.......I am now up to 37 with four more on the way.

Hello, I am addicted to "cluck"

Good to meet you!! Now you did it!! I wouldn't mind trying to hatch eggs like that. This could be getting huge before I even start, lol.

Hi everyone! Hope you don,t mind me sharing my recent story. Just got back from tractor supply for a new water bucket for my horse (he destroyed his other one) and thair chicks are finnally here! I had to look away from them and say to myself "I cant get any chickens, I cant get any chickens, I cant get any chickens" I was hard, but I got out of ther with no chicks.
I swear, another miniute in there, and I would have to be tied down.

Originally I ordered 10 barred rock pullets from My Pet Chicken. I thought I had thought that through. But all the other people on BYC were getting all different kinds of chicks and they could tell theirs apart easily. I started checking out other breeds and learned about BLUE eggs! Oh my, I just had to have some of those Cream Legbars. Low and behold I found someone on BYC that lived nearby and had some. I got two pullets and one cockerel and some cheaper mixed breed that also would lay blue eggs aaannd... Have you ever seen a pic of a splash blue laced red Wyandotte hen? I just thought that was the prettiest chicken I had ever seen and she bred those too. So I ordered a total of 11, and she threw in 3 freebies. Thought my husband was going to have a stroke. I had only told him about 9. That was all last spring. I currently have 9 chicks in the brooder and 15 eggs in the incubator. Hubby says I have a problem.

Welcome to the club!

I think we were going to do 10 to 12 for meat and eggs, 3 years ago.

Now $100's in and 100's of birds later, I am moving my flock towards uber rare breeds and I love it!

Well, what's 5 more, right? I can't get too crazy with mine because of the golf course in my back yard, or I would have quite a few too!! At least two of each breed that I like or find interesting. Plus, my coop will only be 11x8, so only so many will be able to fit. Although, the coop is only half of my bottom porch. Would a 20x 11 coop be too big? LOL

Whew. I'm glad you are all the way over in Kansas. But....have you heard of "shipped eggs"? Lol Actually I have been studying up on breeding and how to try to improve a breed's genetics. I want to do a good dual purpose flock and make it the best it can be. I have chosen the Black Java, partly because it sounds like it is already what I have in mind but has been pushed aside and not that many are left. If I get a really good flock going in a few years I think there will be a good market.
