Chicken math

Lost a chick yesterday. An OE that I bought a month ago from local breeder. It was acting sick, so it was in the isolation cage with 2 others that had been picked on.

They have shut down all swaps and shipping of birds here in Ohio due to the bird flu. To my knowledge there were no cases of the bird flu here in Ohio, just taking precautionary measures. Even 4H is not allowed to show birds at the fairs this year. I feel bad for the kids, but in the same token, they are hopefully learning just how important biosecurity is.

After a few years of holding at around 8-10 chickens, we've begun to increase the rate at which we increase the size of our flock. We're at 25 now. We got there through a combination of buying, raising, and barter. What started out as "let's raise chickens" has turned into a wonderful combination of community, animal husbandry, learning, and hobby. While we don't have any restrictions on the number of birds we can have (within reason), we will be near the limit of what we can support in a healthy and neighborly fashion by the end of the year. Maintaining a flock size is going to require an additional set of skills, and we're looking forward to it.

It's so hard to resist those little puffs! I'm at 20 now and every time I go to buy feed they have a different breed. I've been able to resist for the last 3 weeks but it's getting quite difficult.
haha you say that but there is always room for more!

We stared off with 6 and then the weekend after went back for 6 more :)

So I have a question I have a heen that from time to time goes broody and is a very good mother is it possible to seperate her and give her baby chicks if shes not in a broody spell will she go ahead and care for them or worse

I do not think giving a non-broody hen chicks is a good idea. They will not have the hormones running that tell them to care for the chicks and will likely reject or attack them.
