Chicken math

Performed my first subtractions today, two extra cockerels that were not a good fit for my flock. That was a new experience for me, I had no idea feathers were so gross. Sadly my older boy was rather attached to one of them and has declared he's a vegetarian until they aren't in the freezer anymore lol.

I'm still working my way to being able to do this. Kudos to you for handling it.

What dies this blue laced red wyandotte chicken look like? I'm new, have 6 Wilkie chicks, white, and trying to decide how many and of what brewed next to get!!

The reality of keeping chickens is that there are more cockerels than there are homes that need/want to keep them - and it sounds like you gave these boys a wonderful life that ended in a clean, efficient manner.  Well done and best of luck on the next round.    Sounds like you have ended up with quite a few cockerels, did you source straight run chicks and/or hatch your own or?

Yup, there are always going to be more cockerels than "safe haven" homes. I enjoyed every minute of raising them from day old chicks, and I have learned a lot! I got my chicks out from a local feed store feed straight run bin, didn't know the can of worms I was opening lol. I can also admit that I knew so little about chickens when I got them, that when they told us "these are straightrun", I thought that was a breed.
I purchased some sexed australorps and EEs after that, and out of 9, I know one of the lorps is a cockerel, and I suspect one of my EEs as well.
The last 4 are from a feed store that finally told me that they got the ones I bought from a local "breeder", so I am not sure about them yet.

Thanks everyone for the support, it's been a long day haha.

They are pretty but not for me. I am not fond of the wyandottes I have had. I think I will stick with dark brahma and such.

This is Sarah and Jasmine. (Sarah is the dark one)

Great job. Respect to whoever puts food on their table with extra roosters. It's true it's a sad reality that there isn't enough homes for everyones roosters. The next best thing is chicken soup :)

Well it is chicken math after all.

The light one is super sweet. Yes I am rather fond of the decorative feathering. My favorite breed will always be the Black Australorp though.
