Chicken math

New adventures in chicken math! I have expanded as of today into turkey math! +2 :D Now that my 22 layers are all producing nicely, I figured it's time to add another angle. Picking up 6 Cornish cross tomorrow as a test run for meat birds, although I'm sending my wife to pick them up so she may see other cute chicks that she wants (which I'm encouraging lol).
Current total: 26 birds
Projected total tomorrow: 32+

Stepping in to turkey math is a whole different ballgame! You'll have turkeys coming out your ears next year lol

Well I failed to do chicken math correctly yesterday when I posted. I now have 3 turkeys, 8 CXs, and 4 leghorns too. Total count: 39. LOL

Reminds me of some saying, it goes like "don't count your chickens before they hatch"

Oh yeah, and the feed store is going to have peachicks, I might have to get a pair...

LOL. In January I started out ordering 5 female Barred Rock chicks.I got worried. What if something happens to a couple of them? Oh no! I better add two more female Barred Rocks, you know, "incase". Then I found out the hatchery gives away a free chick and in January you were able to pick the sex and the breed is a suprise! well, how could I pass that up! I picked a female . I got to looking at the online catalog in Rare breeds. I came across a Golden Cuckoo Maran I thought "My husband" would really like! well I added a female to "suprise him with" i mean who can resist chocolate color eggs right?? Then later, looking through the catalog again in Rare breeds I found another breed "my husband" would love but limit was 1 and they only had ONE female left! Well I had to act fast didn't i? I thought this Silver Penciled Rock was just Gorgeous! I don't want to disappoint "hubby" now do I? So I ordered 1 "for him".. SOME HOW my order of 5 turned into a order of 10! Now that's Chicken math at its FINEST! But...what do I tell hubby?? YIKES. Since we ordered in January;.....(and February, and March)hubby had forgotten how many we ordered and asked the other day while expanding the coop...it just FLEW out of my mouth at 8. um, yeah 8 so now I ONLY have two extra to a count for and not 5 extra!!! Whew dodged that bullet...but how to explain the two extra?? um, um,maybe the hatchery was extra generous and added two for warmth? YIKES! I don't know how I'm going to explain the extra "two" .I'm just greatful I was able to say 8 and help "refresh" um, his memory. Two might be a bit easier to explain then 5!!

Sometimes it's just not our fault. Ohio has a law that you HAVE to purchase a minimum of 6 chicks. You buy the six, then the feed store gets another breed that you really wanted, so, well, you have to buy at least 6 more.

Also, this year I mail ordered chicks from Meyer hatchery. I got "extras" since I lost a lot last year from the feed store purchases. Anyway, I ordered 25 total. One was a "surprise breed" for a discount price because I think their " meal maker" program is awesome. So, I have a surprise chick. They also shipped 2 extra......like I'm going to complain:D. Here I am a month later and thankfully all are happy and healthy.

I love reading all of these! I currently have 6, planning on getting a few more next week. However, I'm already strategically planning on getting more next year

. I was planning on having a small backyard flock for some fresh eggs, but I didn't know what chicken math was until I got my first chicks

That's so great! I couldn't resist Meyers Meal Maker either , I mean, come on, what fun! a suprise breed!
and Female to boot! Heck yeah! let's keep in touch and figure out our suprise breeds! :) what a joy! my meal maker is the only one I've named. when she comes next Monday 11th I'm going to call her Charity :)

Got 8 chicks. Lost one. 5 of the remaining 7 are already showing themselves to be boys. We'll just have to order more to make up for it

Oh no! That's a lot of boys! maybe next year get sexed pullets! of course a roo could still sneek in here or there, but not as many as straight run :) will you be keeping the boys??

Maybe one of them, if one stands out as extra sweet.

I consider it an excuse to get more chicks after enjoying raising up a batch of chicks lol.
