So I have a cockerel/rooster whos name is Nugget. Yes. Nugget. He likes to crow whenever he wants basically. And our neighbours don't seem to like him as much I do. So for the last couple of nights (which he HAS BEEN CROWING FOR :() I decided to stay with him as he sings his heart out in the night. So i set up a little chair in front of the coop, making sure the hens weren't being bothered i picked him up and he sat on my lap. ( he is basically a lap dog :love ) and i decided maybe singing would help him you know since he was singing already anyway. so i sang him "You are My Sunshine" I didnt think it would help but i kept singing and he slowly calmed down. I put him back into the coop with all the Ladies ;) ;) ;) and they went to sleep.

The next day I decided to do this with all my hens. (they have been a little stressed lately) I sat the in their roost earlier in the evening when the sun was just about to go down and i started to sing i even found a backing track to it and they seemed to calm down. and before I went i left a speaker that played vivaldi's four seasons quietly. And they went to sleep. I hope this helps you with how to calm your chickens down. t might take a little bit of time to get them to calm down on your lap first.

Im so sorry if this post isnt as good as everyone elses because this is my first and i hope the first of many to come. Im sorry if the spelling is different I come from Australia :D :D

Welcome to BYC! Nice scenario! I love the sound of crowing too.
(But, that said, I'd stop holding the cockerel....the ones that are coddled can interpret that as submission and they are more likely to become aggressive twd people. Hard to believe now, but it's a common story around here.)

What a considerate chicken parent you are! It's great that you are trying to placate neighbors and calm your chickens at the same time.

Your song of choice is the same one I used to sing to my dog, a beautiful Keeshond, when we would drive home from her chemo treatments. It is, apparently, a soothing melody -- because it sure wasn't my singing voice that settled Holly down.

Your spelling and was fine, and your post was entertaining. Keep on writing, and welcome to the group!!

Hello and Welcome to BYC.
Singing to chickens...yep, I’ve done it to.

Strangely, this isn’t that strange. The farm I spent a great deal of my youth on had battery chickens and they had a radio on which was pipped through speakers in the shed. This apparently helped keep the chickens calm.

I made a contact in Tasmania who keeps chickens in similar arrangements to mine and she has a speaker set up in all of her coops through which she plays music on the days she can’t let the chickens free range and out of their coops.

Keep singing…..just not too loud okay.:p
