Chicken mites or fleas

Oh...Yes in the bag of feed, if kept in a dry place.

I thought for one second you where meaning that is she put DE in her feed, feed as in feed bowl for the chickens to eat, that it would help with lice and mites on the chicken.
Nope...kind of hard thread to follow here, much refers to thread of mine linked earlier.

Permethrin based spray...sprayed in every nook and cranny of the coop.
This is what we use when necessary. If used properly, don't have to use frequently and if stored properly will last for years. Yes it's pricey, but a good investment, if you have a backyard flock will last you for years. Good luck

It's pretty cheap to purchase in my area. 10 bucks or less for a bottle.

It might be worth the five hour drive if I ever have to buy more. I could visit with a friend I have there over a weekend vacation! I love this site.

Thanks to everyone for the information. Its comforting to know if i have a question i can get advice. And thank you aart i would have had no idea it was grain mites, if you hadent posted. Im going to take action soon, think ive got enought information. Now i need to make a plan. I got some garden and poultry dust but am still looking for the spray thats been metioned. I had bought some DE a while back but then saw it wasn't food grade, but i might use it in some areas, maybe in the grass around the pen. The mites are so exposed at night i was thinking about spraying something on them as i see them.

One thing im on the fence about is if i should just use the rest of the feed and then start the process of cleaning. Or just burn the feed and clean the containers keep the new feed far from the house. And then clean.

I also saw something on another thread about blow torching the corners of the coop before you treat. Kinda interesting and bad ass lol.

This grain mite thing really sucks i dont even want to go back to orscheln to get new food, i bet all the bags have it by now. And my only other option is an MFA and they only have plain layer feed.

Don't know where you live, but we sometimes take a ride to the country to get feed. It's cheeper and we get a one day road trip visit somewhere different. We live in the city.

Be careful with the blow torch, please. Loyola University New Orleans lost their Music building to a roofer with a blow torch in the 1980's. It was a great old, large house on campus that had been re purposed. Attic was smoldering and no one realized it until it was too late.

I dont have a blow torch so im not going to do that. But i bet it is effective, but also very dangerous.

What a shame i love old buildings.

I was thinking if u put in their holes where they dust bathe it might help. I use DE on ny dog for fleas and shes never had a flea. Just thought it would help with mites.

Some people will swear it helps prevent them until their chickens get infested with them.
