I have owned my chickens about 17 weeks now! We purchased all of our chicks through the local farm stores who I have now come to the conclusion that they have no idea what they are selling and some have been miss marked/labeled. Even to the point of actually knowing how old they are! :barnie So I am estimating that the girls around closer to 18-20 weeks and it is a hustle to get nesting boxes ready for eggs! BYC has been an amazing resource that I love! But unfortunately I cannot actually tell what breed of chickens I have, as I have finally given up my guessing! :lau Any help would be greatly appreciated. So here is the list of what I thought we were purchasing (Somehow I did not get a single Rooster):
4 Jersey giants - they are the same size as the rest of my girls so not to sure
3 Americaunas (I think they are actually a cross breed closer known easter egger)
2 Production reds - Rhode Island Red, maybe?
2 Barred Rock - they are definitely not barred rock
My "Jersey Giants" and non"Barred Rock" all look similar, with some brownish/red feathers under the black feathers on their neck only and they all also have an iridescent coloring to their feathers.

What color are the foot bottoms on the black ones? Also yes, I see three Easter egger pullets, no barred rock and a couple production reds of some type. You won the chicken lottery with the pullets huh
A couple of the black ones have the dark grey/slate colored feet and then the others have mottled yellowish/light grey colored feet.

Looks you may have some black sex links!
Thank you, after looking them up it appears that you are correct! I appreciate your help! My husband is slightly depressed that we dont have any of the Jersey giants but maybe next year I might order some directly from a hatchery for him.

The black w/out red... do you have any of those? Look at their foot bottoms. Yellow would mean black jersey giants. Pinkish gray would be austrolorps.
Your 'americana' are indeed easter eggers, which I don't know how hatcheries get away with selling EE under that name so close to the actual Ameraucana name... SIGH...
and yes, the black with red are black sex links, and the reds appear to be production reds, but not red sex links.

Thank you, such good information! I will look closer at their feet when I get home tonight and report back.

Yes I got irritated at the register about the "Ameraucana" chicks, and I did let her know that is not what they are selling. But of course nothing happened. I think it allows them to charge a higher price for a pure bred when they obviously have no idea what they are actually selling.
