Hello group!
I'm Lynda, and our girls are about 2 years old now. I currently have 5 -- one black and white Brahma (Rose), three Buff Orpingtons (Lucy and Ethel, and Sophia), and one Gold-Flecked Wyandotte (Tanisha). We've had a few "debacles" to get to the five we have now. We've lost 2 to hawks -- an easter-egger who my husband jokingly named Bon Qui-Qui (Angelah Johnson fans get this one), and, about a month ago, another of our Gold-Flecked Wyandottes (GFWs), Felicia. "Bye Felecia" is not a good joke in our house right now.
Sophia also had a "sister" - Blanche Devereaux - who amazingly was a roo ... isn't that irony at its best?? S/he immediately moved to a farm since their coop was right outside our bedroom window.
So, now we are at 5. Well, until yesterday that is. Our local chick supplier got Brahmas and Gold-flecked Wyandottes on the same day, and my granddaughter (11-years old - Abby) decided it's time to even things up. So we now have four more. Our two Brahma babies are Pearl and Emma, and our two GFW babies are Madeline and Alice. That will give us a total of nine, three of each variety. The symmetry comes from me.
Although they started out in a DIY enclosure outside our bedroom window, we decided to do something a bit more attractive when the original wooden "prefabs" started falling apart. Our girls now live in the Taj Macoop. We bought an enclosed "habitat" from Tractor Supply that has a 10 x 10 x 8 fenced "run" with an attached coop/roost/nesting box. (Picture below) The Florida summers are brutally hot, so my hubby put a tarp over it for shade, but the still get their sun through the open walls. They also now have a fenced area about 3 feet all the way around. They seem quite happy out there and egg production has been good, so I think we are on to something with this.
I love all things "chicken chat" and everyone brings me chicken-inspired stuff ... from coffee mugs to shirts, signage for the coop, and carved wooden chickens from New Mexican Indians. I love it! Glad to meet you all!
