Day 22 and nothing yet....

I am trying not to think about it too much until Friday. If there are not any babies by then I will have to start figuring out what is going on and what to do. I am hopeful she gets at least 1 chick for her efforts.

How many is she sitting on? I've had 2 broodies in the past. I even had one start, then decided...nah, don't wanna anymore! Lol! It's easy to get all worked up in anticipation. I also have some pure Cuckoo Marans eggs incubating with the mutts. Saturday can't come soon enough! Good luck with your broody hatch!

BTW, some chicken breeds hatch later. 25 days is the norm for Marans.

i meant to post this the other day: Here are a couple pics of my silkie x ??? rooster (i think leghorn)
Notice the straight comb, but it is flopped over. and the large wattles.

She has 6 eggs. I did not know the breeds can hatch at different rates. Thank you for telling me that. They will be Araucana/Wyandotte mutts. I will maybe let her go until next week some time before checking into what is going on then. It is her and my first time, she has been very dedicated and I really do not want to get her all upset by checking her eggs. I am also concerned I would accidentally drop one or something and bust open an egg with the baby chick inside. That would be AWFUL! So I am trying not to mess them. It is REALLY difficult to stay out of the coop and leave it alone!

Yeah, I know its tough to keep hands out! I so enjoy candling them to see the life moving inside! In any case, my research turned up nothing about late hatching with either of the breeds you mentioned. Perhaps the eggs got a bit chilled at some point. Don't worry, if that's the case, they just need more time.

That could definitely be a possibility. In the very beginning My broody was sitting on her clutch and my brat wyandottes would come in and peck her on her comb until the broody got out of the nest. Then I guess they would lay their egg in the clutch and leave. I found my broody in the wrong nest box a couple of times. She was probably sitting 3 or 4 days when I witnessed what was going on and separated her to her own nest box and half of the coop.

Oh yeah, that happened to mine too. It helps to mark the eggs, so you can see who added later to the nest. If you don't let her set the later ones, you won't have to worry about abandoned eggs later. My last broody gave up with 2 eggs left to hatch. She was busy with the 6 she wanted. Then the 7th one pipped & hatched. She ignored it, but eventually I got her to accept him. I couldn't do anything about the last egg with no incubator.
