Chicken "mutt" club!!!

Pics
posting this at work, so the pictures aren't the best.. (yes I am posting and reading your comments while trying to work- it's Friday, that's my excuse :) )
my full size speckled Sussex hen mated with a red laced Wyandotte bantam rooster. She hatched 6 eggs. when they came out 3 where a light yellowish chick color, and three where darker. :) now one of the dark chicks is a rooster with nice greenish tail feathers, the other two dark ones are hens. in the light ones, two were rooster and they look closer to the red laced Wyandotte breed. on of the light ones is another hen- again looks close to a red laced Wyandotte.
even thou they are mutts I still think they are really pretty..... it's kind of silly to say that your chickens are pretty- but there I said it- it's true :)

Those are Spanish for the numbers 1 through 4. Made me giggle. Mine have names like that. spot 1, spot 2, rainbow 1 and 2, pepper, funky black/orange 1-9, etc.
That's right! Español! Since I don't know what sex they are yet (or even if they're going to be nice enough to warrant names), I'm sticking with "One", "Two", "Three", and "Four" until they're older. :3

Well I say my chickens are pretty all the time - because it is true. Interesting mix there, and very interesting split in genetics on the colors. Did you get any adults with the mottled feathers?

I think my mutts from my EE x Blue Isbar are some of the prettiest ones - I have to get an updated picture of them, thanks for reminding me!

I was looking at my flock and have come up with a idea. In my mixed flock my roo is blue splash bantam over about every color you can think of. I'm wondering what the splash may produce. Does anyone have picks of a splash crossed with with any other color? Thanks

That is an easy genetics question. All of the children will have Blue where the parent has Black. Depending on what else your Splash has under him you might have other additions - but that is it basically in a nutshell. Take your hens - look at any Black feathers and imagine them Gray/Blue instead of black. Whallah!

Thats cool, I have a couple black hens so solid blues should turn up. What about the splash pattern I really like it but he is the only one I have. My girls are mostly solid or laced patterned.

Splash is not a pattern - it is random and does not transfer. Its caused by two copies of the Blue gene - which are trying to wipe out all the color from the feathers leaving only white. It doesn't do a very good job - so that's where you get the "pattern". Take away one copy (breed to a non-splash bird) and you will not have that effect.

If you have solid Black hens you will create solid Blues, all chicks will be blue. Then breed him to the Blue girls and you will get some more Splashes (50% chance). Here is a cool chart on Blue breeding:

Blue only marginally affects red, so it wont change any red coloration on any bird. It only changes Black. On the laced birds it will only change the black of the lacing, not any white or any red.

Have fun, and be sure to post your chicks when they hatch and when they grow up!

Thanks that helps alot. I'll try my white crested blue polish, black EE, white silkie( she has 1 black spot ) and 2 sultans( both have stray black feathers). I'll be sure to post pics.

White Crested Black will give you blue crested black, hopefully. Black EE will give you Blue. White Silkie (if she is White and NOT Paint) will give you who knows what - White in Silkies is two copies of recessive white and it hides everything. Paint is Dominant White over Black, and Sultans may also be based on Dominant White (not sure on this) - so you might get little blue stray feathers.

Please do, they sound interesting.

Quote: Oh boy, that takes me back to my school days doing biology and the genetic dominance of blue green and brown eyes
My white hen has had eggs of hers hatch before and the chicks both male and female have never been white, yet I have one chick now that is white, the two roosters are ginger and dark brown respectively. Which would be the male donor in this chick do you think?
