Chicken nails

Do you have to cut them? Or can you file them? I noticed that all of my flocks nails have gotten a bit long since its winter here in maine an they atent able to starch the ground as much. I just dont wanna risk cutting the vien and making them bleed. And i have one of those dog nail filers i could use.

yesssss when my rooster nail grow long long they hurt me when they playing with me or anyone ..so First I wash their feet's in lukewarm water to soften the nails then I cut the sharp edges then I file them don't cut too deep they'll bleed if u cut so deep ..I Cut My Rooster Beak When it grow so long I trim and file it

It's not difficult to cut their nails, a lot easier if you have someone to help you. Don't try to take a lot off at one time. If you can see thru the nails, look to locate the pulp inside and try not to cut that far. But if you do see blood, styptic powder stops the bleeding. You will need a heavy duty dog nail clipper, chicken nails are thick and tough. I prefer to cut them file the sharp edges.

Thank you all for the info and tips. Today ill going look them over and see exactly how long the are but i know they are fairly long. Also i really like that idea of using pavers or putting starch on gravel or something. Its almost like when walking a dog on tar it files their nails. I know i have flippers and that file thing i have works good. But well see how it goes.
