my great uncle introduced me to chook husbandry and specifically chook naming. He was fond of his silkies and at the time you could get any colour you wanted as long as it was black or white... so the black ones were called Snowy and the white ones were Sooty.

As kids we had a delivery of day olds, before we could get the box from the gate a neighbours dog got to it and ripped through 21 of the 24 chicks plus tearing the wing of one of the survivors which was immediately named Chunks, from this horrendous start Chunks grew to be the biggest Rhode Island Red rooster we've ever had.

We have alwas worked on the "don't name anything you're going to eat" theory although some names slip through, for some reason our lavender sussex rooster got the name Dave, and a rescued battery hen is called Buster the crash test chicken.
