Hi there!

Well life has a funny way of coming full circle. My youth on a dairy farm (and with a dozen hens and a rooster) has come back to my urban life in Brooklyn, NY...

Long story short, a hen ended up in my backyard, evidently my landlady thought this would be a cute this for the kids to play with. She acquired the chicken from some farm somewhere and...well, I don't know who kidnaps a chicken, but, she ended up in my yard. I didn't kow what to do at first and was wasting time looking for a rescue to take her. Landlady said only "If you want, I get rid of chicken..." NO THANKS! I had a few things that fell through and, well, she is still with us (miraculously through a brutal winter), She lives is in a makeshift coop and has free use of our back yard and porch (kinda smelly and icky) but she prefers to roost by our window on a porch railing. I found this site looking for easy coop plans... time for a proper home.

Now this weekend, another wacky bird story... neighbor kid and friend of my daughter evidently bought a "chick" from the live poultry place (asian neighborhood)... and my daughter volunteered to babysit it this weekend. I have been very sick with pneumonia this week and was knocked out all morning. Woke up to find what I think is probably a quail in my house?! Since we are the neighborhood animal rescuers, and since this other family is...less animal-centric, I have a suspicion this poor little baby is gonna get dumped... here.

How do they get along with chickens? Pretty sure our gal is a Rhode Island Red, which is what I had as a kid. Unless there is another breed that looks like that...

I snapped this photo of the mystery "chick" tonight... quail? looks like pheasant feathers, which is what made me think quail (I've been in Brooklyn a long time since pheasants and barnyards) Someone on social media said coturnix roo?

I had some pics of "chicken" (that's her name) but I'll have to post them later... I've gotten attached to that little lady...

Guess it was still a long story.

Anyway, hello and THANK YOU FOR THIS SITE!

Glad to have you with us. See you around. I hope that you find everything you need to know. That is a corturix quail hen because it has dappled chest feathers.

If you go to "other backyard poultry" forum you will find threads for quail, guineas, ducks, geese, etc.

If you post on one the quail threads I'm sure someone can give you any information you need.

Thank you! I think I got the answer to my chicken and quail together question! (a big huge no)

Yes, Coturnix quail. And no, you can't keep quail with chickens due to diseases that can kill quail, different feed requirements and size difference.

You will need to get her on gamebird food. If you need any tips and hints on keeping your new quail, stop by our quail section here on BYC for lots of helpful members with great info....

Good luck with all your new adventures and welcome to the flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Thank you for rescuing the poor birds, they're lucky you were around. If you need to rehome them you can also try posting in your state thread, and the BYC Buy-Sell-Trade forum has sections for other poultry and for animals in need of rehoming.
