Chicken Newbie in the SoCal Desert

Hello everyone. I recently brought 8 chicks into my life and have surfed into this site numerous times while researching their care. I lived with chickens a couple of times as a child, but was never the one responsible for them, so this is truly a new experience for me. I have always liked chickens and feel like having a free range flock will make this place feel more like a home and we look forward to raising our almost 10 months old daughter around them.
We are going to have them mainly as companion animals, but I look forward to the help with bug control and my compost.
I really want to say thank you to everyone who posts here and especially the creators of the site because even though I haven't made a post before now, I have been reading a lot and you have been truly helpful.
I am excited to begin my journey with chickens!
