Hello All! My wife and I are new to the chicken rearing game and are here to learn from the experts. My wife grew up with horses and farm settings so we are not complete strangers to the lifestyle but are in need of some good resources and advice. We are looking to build our first coop and house 4-6 hens. We live in Northern California in an urban/suburban setting on 0.5 acre. We have a 4 year old son and 6 month old baby daughter as well a dog and cat. I look forward to sleepless nights reading the forum section and trying to retain as much chicken wisdom as possible!

Hello and welcome to BYC.

This is a great link, imo - http://www.backyardchickens.com/a/how-much-room-do-chickens-need

On this link you'll find lots of information on almost every aspect of keeping chickens - from coop building ideas, to incubating eggs - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/

There’s a link on the page above to the Learning Centre - it’s a great resource. If you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

Glad you're here !

A must have for your poultry is a FIRST AID KIT for any issues that would arise. (https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/suggestions-for-a-first-aid-kit.1150128/) and (https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...essential-supplies-and-how-to-use-them.64830/)
It's definitely better to have it and not need it rather than need it and not have it.

Also, make sure your coop(s) have a proper amount of VENTILATION. (https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...-there-and-cut-more-holes-in-your-coop.47774/) Your chickens will absolutely thank you for it!

One last thing, if you're into gardening, feel free to join this years SEED SWAP (https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/seed-swap.1220129/)

:welcome There's many knowledgable and helpful members here so this site should be a useful resource on your chicken adventures. Best of luck :thumbsup
