I couldn't be happier to have found this group because I'm going to need lots of advice making my way into the chicken world! My family and I have been considering chickens for eggs for a while now, but I have always said no due to where we live (on the edge of the woods), which brings a fear of predators! After some research and advice from neighbors, we took the plunge and now have thirteen 2-3 week old chicks! Our breeds include Buff Brahamas, Cuckoo Marans, Golden Laced Wyandotte and four that came as surprise brown egg layers. I believe that three of them are Golden Buffs, but not sure about the fourth one. She is a light yellow with two brown stripes going down her back, so any advice on that would be appreciated!! We sadly lost two Cuckoo chicks within the first week, and I sure hope that doesn't happen again!
My husband and I live out in the country on 5 acres with our three kids (13, 10 & 7) along with our Golden Retriever (who wants to lick the chicks whenever she can) and a sweet kitty who is also a hunter, so we have been keeping them as far apart as possible at this stage! It has been so fun to see the kids interacting with the chicks and helping in any way needed! They take care of all feeding, watering and cleaning needs while my husband and I have been building the coupe together. So far, it's been a great family experience!
My hobbies include gardening, camping, hiking and listening to Dave Matthews Band! I think it's already safe to say that being a chicken momma can be added to the list! I really love watching these chicks grow and learning as much as I can about them.
Looking forward to becoming a part of the community!
