(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We got our first chickens about 3 months ago. And some guineas, I had some growing up but these are my first as an adult
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have 11 chickens, 2 adult Guineas, and 12-1.5 week old Guinea keets
(3) What breeds do you have?
we have 4 buff orpingtons (got as adults from neighbor about 1.5 years old), 2 bantams, 2 Araucana hens 1 rooster, and 2 Road Island red/Chinese fighting bird mixes (that is what I was told from the feed store). The 2 bantam's and 2 araucana hens I raised from day old chicks.
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
I looked for a chicken forum to help with some issues I am having.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
We raise APBT's (American Pit Bull Terriers) for show and have the #1 working kennel in many dog sports for our breed.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
It is my husband and I on a 3 acre farm in NM, we have our dogs, the birds, an orchard and soon goats. I have a boarding kennel and dog training business and stay home with our 13 dogs.
Our dogs like our new addition of the chickens. I thought I would have a big problem with prey drive but they just look at them then walk away. My Boston terrier is the only one that tries to get in the coop, my chickens are much bigger and out weight him but he still thinks they look like lunch! lol
Our chickens live in a large coop. It was here when we bought the place and I am also looking for ideas to improve on the coop. Our Guineas are going to be free range to keep the ticks down. We had such a horrible tick problem last year and I spent a fourtune on tick sprays. This year we are trying the natural approach.
That is pretty much it, I just am having a few issues and i think this is the best place to get answers from, thank you.
