chicken newbie!

Hi, well my 5 year old son and I are starting our chicken adventure! We plan on just a few show qaulity chicken for a 4-H project and maybe enjoy somefresh eggs as a bonus. Any advice on fun rare breeds that also lay eggs would be appreciated.

I know Polish chickens are great show birds, and they do lay beautiful eggs! The eggs are just not very big.
I have Americanas, and they are very beautiful too! I get at least 3 blue eggs a day from 5 birds, sometimes I get 5 eggs a day, and i get very excited when I do!

Try googling the Henderson Chicken Chart for charactoristics of different breeds. For a child new to chickens, you are better off with a mild-tempered bird that is easier to handle - Cochins are often good chickens for beginners, as they are docile and are not rare.
