Chicken Noise from 100 Ft Away

Eeessh! Nothing like modern life. Someone complains about an 8lb bird, then gets at Oh-dark-hundred to vacuum their window frames. What have we come to?

If you are on good terms with your neighbor, and friendly, they never complain about your chickens. That always seems to be the key. Otherwise, start checking with realtors about land out in the unincorporated areas. If it's zones agricultural, then you are home free.

And I ain't joking, none. That's what alot of us here wound up doing.

Our run is probably 200 ft from our house with 8 girls. There are trees between us, but I'd call it mostly open ground. Before I got them, I was told they were commercial Rhode island reds (which are known to be loud), but from what I've seen on here, they look more like red sex links. When our only window that faces that way is open, I can faintly hear them singing their egg song, but can't hear typical chatter. When I'm 100 ft away, I'd say both sounds are considerably louder. At 50 ft they are quite loud. My girls know they get let out between 8:30 & 9:00 every morning, and they are always yelling at me to hurry up. If they stayed in the run all day, you may not have that problem. Other than them yelling to get out and their egg songs, they are very quiet, which I would say is 99% of the time. Unfortunately, for a more urban setting, those noises can be rather early for some people.

Thanks everyone! I guess until birds are here, there's no way to know what it'll be like. I think noise is a relative term too. To me, obnoxious cars and motorcycles, nonstop landscaping, yelling and late night partying are all a nuisance. Well-kept chickens are no big deal to me and if it were me on the other side, I'd be delighted if my neighbors kept them them shared a handful of eggs each week.

Interesting about your rooster! Thanks for your feedback. It's looking like some nice, friendly, quiet, heavy birds might be the way to go.

Are yours similarly spaced from your neighbors as my birds will be? This goes for MomJones and anyone else too.
Mine are much closer than 100 feet, like 50 feet maybe, they love the chicken noise but I'm moving to coop down the hill a little so it doesn't line up as much with their house. One neighbor gave me $50 to get more chickens since she misses the noises. I have great neighbors.

How awesome is that! Great neighbors indeed. 🙂

Yikes... Definitely want to avoid this. There's no yards between us, just that wooded area I described. I wonder how many chickens they had that produced so much noise? I'm hoping 6 or so heavy, "quiet" girls won't be trouble. I hear dogs from at least 200' and landscapers pretty much all day in the neighborhood and it's not a nuisance to me. My 4 and 2 year olds probably make more of a ruckus.
I think there are about 8-10 or so. When I lived in a building in Brooklyn, wild pigeons on the ledges and window frames were everywhere. They make a constant moaning ruckus, basicly 18 hours a day. When I started hearing the chickens, at first I didn’t notice, my brain had already been trained to tune out bird moaning, but my neighbor had told me one day that the person who lives between him and the chicken owners had been complaining about the chickens moaning and stuff. I had no idea chickens even made those sounds, if you had asked me and I stopped to think about it, I probably would have guessed the noise came from the regular wild birds in the woods.

I think some people just have an axe to grind... Chickens in the middle of Brooklyn sound lovely to me!

I know my chickens can be heard from several hundred feet away (as I can hear them while jogging down the street) but at the same time, the run is only about 20' from our living room, so I figure if it doesn't bother me then no one else should be complaining either. I actually think our run is perfectly positioned. Far enough from our bedroom (about 100') that we don't get woken up (we use a white noise machine), but close enough to the house in general that IF something happens outside, we can hear the ruckus and run out to see what's happening.
