I live in Southern Oregon, and have had byc for about 2 years. Suddenly my neighbor has started complaining aboit their noise! He has called code enforcement several times, but the law here is very vague and only states that the chickens cannot be a noise nuisance. Basically the ordinance is totally subjective. Is there anything I can do to keep my girls???

You are right that ordinances written in a subjective way are quite difficult - one man's noise is another man's music.
Can you pinpoint the times when your girls are at their noisiest? If so, can you then identify some steps that could be taken to address those time in ways that would reduce the noise they produce? Are you home during the day or away at work? Are you the only person in the vicinity with a flock?

They usually only make noise around 11ish am when they are laying. But the neighbor says he needs to sleep until 10am, and they make noise and wake him up. Ironically, the girls have started grumbling early aroumd 7am!!! There is a right to farm law in oregon, but i dont know how that applies to my town, and if i have the time to navigate all of that jargon!!

That's unfortunate. It seems that maybe this neighbor has been told all they can complain about is noise, so that becomes the issue he uses. I would ask if he has any pets, if not, I bet he has an air conditioner. Both of which make more noise than a chicken.

Do you have roosters?

His dog is very sweet and quiet, except when she wines cuz she cant eat my chickens! Lol!
He actually works out of his shop and makes a ton of noise!! Very ironic.
No rooster, just 5 ladies!

Have you been told by code enforcement that you need to remove your hens?

Hens can be noisy buggars - which is why I find the specific targeting of "crowing birds" to be kind of silly in the writing of ordinances regarding poultry.

Not that I need to remove them, just that they cant make noise. And if the neighbor chooses he can make them fine me. I am researching Oregons right to farm laws, but its a lot to wade through!
