I started putting my 8 week chicks outside 2 nights ago. Around dusk they start making lots of noise. Is that normal? Are they telling me they are ready to go inside? They haven’t learned to go into the roosting bar area yet. I am trying to get them to learn by shooshing them up the ramp.
Also is it normal none of them go
On the roosting bars? They kind of lay around on the sawdust I have in there.
They make the same noises for about 5 min once I close them in the roosting area but then if I peek on them they are sleeping.
I am *hopefully* linking a video for the noises. I am brand new to this website so don’t know if it will work

Hi, i listened to the video and they seemed scared. So yes they are probably telling you they want to go inside. It is normal that they arent perching yet, mine didnt start perching until they were older, but keep showing them the perches exist and they will learn and soon enough they will perch. Mine perch all the time now. But I don’t think this is anything to worry about.
Good luck!

Thank you!!! In reading some other posts one person mentioned that she thought her chickens sensed a predator. We have huge trees behind our property where crows and turkey vultures live and around that time they were all flying in for the night. My chickens are completely secure but they might not have that figured out yet.
Thank you so much!!!

Its normal sounds it is as I figured anyway part " hey come here I don't wanna be alone. and is everybody here." and some minor distress at not yet getting used to this new home and not sure what they are supposed to do. a light for a while right at dusk in there would help them get the idea to go in there. and putting them on the roost bars will help them learn to use them once they figure out they are more comfy than the ground. that of course is provided that the roost bars in deed comfy. I know I had a totally wrong idea of what an ideal roost looked like when I started. It isn't round like I would have and did think the narrow edge of a 2x4 is nearly ideal for full sized birds my bantams prefer too roost on the narrow edge of a 1x2 placed around the edge of the upper walkway for stregnth rather than the 2x4. so I don't know what you have but it will need to be comfy as if it's not it can cause foot injuries I have learned.

Yes that was also possible haha! Usually if you stay with them they are less scared (mine are like that)!

Scared chicks that want to go "home" but theyll come to see the coop as home in a while.

The sounds and everything you describe sounds normal to me.
They will pile in the floor for a while and eventually start roosting on their own.

I think they are just calling to one another and grouping, my youngsters have always done that. That will stop for the most part as they get older and learn the routine and put themselves to "bed" (roost). But I do hear some of my adults call to each other when it's getting dark, especially if one is still goofing around outside and not coming in.

Wild birds get very noisy at sundown also. I agree it's flocking behavior and normal. The other evening i went to put my outdoor girlgirlds up and four of them ran into the coop. One was fiddling around in the grass still. Suddenly she realized she was alone and "peep peeped" her way up the ramp and back home. The others were all calling out to her. So sweet!

It will take them some time to get used to being outside and learn the 'ropes' of the coop and ramp. Many folks leave them confined to the coop for a few or more days to 'home' them there before letting them out into run.

Pics of coop, inside and out, please?
Lots of vocalizations at dusk...I call them 'bedtimes stories'.

Oh, and....
