Do you have any idea what could have happened to him?
Possibly a predator attack - did a dog get a hold of him? Have you inspected him closely for any wounds/bruises?
Can you take him to a vet for xrays? The crying out and indication of pain sounds more like severe injury/broken bones than illness.
