Chicken Owner Needs Help Fighting City Hall

Well, it's to soon for me to tell some of you how to put your foot in your mouth, but for now we have a WIN!

Using my four justifications listed above for the lady in Gulfport Florida whose chickens were on the chopping block seemed to have worked for now. Yes, for now. She gets to keep her chickens, and they will schedule a vote for a later date! It looks like a 3 to 2 vote right now in favor of allowing chickens according to the debate this evening. The two biggest positives were going green, and being self sufficient!

We still have a long road ahead of us. I will keep you posted. I really hope she wins this battle so she can keep her chickens forever, and others can start their own backyard flocks legally as well, but I also look forward to telling some of you how to insert you foot into your mouth!

I've been down this road many times before, and so far (knock on wood) I have never lost!

Fantastic news.

Looks like the city is more worried about the volume of the argument than the facts of the argument.

What it that saying about baffleling them with ....

Wins, take them any way you can get 'em.

As in any debate, both sides can make some pretty convincing points. But I am surprised as the lack of support for Andy's admirable job of trying to help this lady and hopefully others in, or soon to be in her position. Especially from a forum of chicken lovers. Hopefully his support came in the form of emails to the city council.

I think both angles of going green and the chickens are pets (same classification pigeons get in this city) should be used. If pigeons can be kept as long as they are only pets, then why not chickens as well? I can see a rooster ordinance for the obvious reason of crowing, but I've lived in neighborhoods where barking dogs have made more noise than any rooster.

Keep up the good work Andy and keep us posted. We may find ourselves in this ladie's situation.

Again, this is not over! We ALL need to send an e-mail in support of this woman, and pet chickens! Here is the updated info...

City of Gulfport Florida
2401 53rd Street South
Gulfport Florida, 33707
727-893-1000
727-893-1005 (Fax)

Mayor, Mike Yakes (Currently voting yes, but not a strong yes.)
E-mail Address: [email protected]

Council Member, Michele King (Currently voting yes. All for it.)
E-mail Address: [email protected]

Council Member, Mary Stull (Currently voting yes, but on the fence.)
E-mail Address: [email protected]

Council Member, Judy Ryerson (Currently voting no. Strongly against it.)
E-mail Address: [email protected]
Special Note: She claims she grew up on a farm, and has bad memories of chickens.

Council Member, Bob Worthington (Currently voting no. Strongly against it.)
E-mail Address: [email protected]
Special Note: Claims that if they allow pet chickens they will have to allow pet cows, and there would be no end to what else they would have to allow.

If not you then who? If not now then when? (phillip vera cruz)

We can all make a difference in this city, if you just take the time to send a short letter or e-mail!

Thanks,

Andy (Chicken Whisperer)

that's great news for them. for now.

as per sticking my foot in my mouth...my arguments weren't personal. they were just possibilities of what could have come back against the point.

if this is personal for you, that's fine. it's not for those making a case against. it's playing 'Devil's Advocate'. arguments for or against should be FACT not feelings or opinions.

did you see the first line in my first post? i said it was noble.

his points just are too easily rebutted. just because we are a chicken forum and chicken lovers, doesn't mean the points were valid.

his efforts are good, but he's being emotional and demanding. his rude remarks and foul language aren't gaining him any points either.

Andy that is such a nice job you did for that lady. I sent you a PM i hope you could be able to help me out too, i just made a thread but please do ream my pm since it is more detailed. i would most definently apprecaite the help you can do for me as well due to how i also live in Florida and floridas laws still havent changed.....after reading this thread i still have hope for my chickens. I support anyone trying to change the laws so that people can keep their pets. But to be rude and condescending in a post when people are trying to help by pointing out weak spots? That isnt necessary and really puts people off.
