So sorry for your loss @scjcb37. I have also recently lost a hen and had the dilemma of what to do with the body. People who live south of the Mason Dixon line don't understand that when the ground freezes in the more northern states, digging a hole is like digging through concrete. The cost of cremation was too much for me so I asked a local farmer what he did when he suffered a lost in the winter. The compost pile was his response. This is a much better option than keeping the body on ice in my potting shed until the Spring thaw (and that would be May).
