@Bubbles12345 , your boys were quite handsome! I must say that Emma is lovely as always. Is she still laying decently?

That's hysterical and very creative, @uzisuzuki !

Odysseus sounds like a very interesting individual to have around. Talk about mood swings, huh?

It appears that you have your hands full of bird, although I suspect you enjoy it.

I can tell you that I enjoy caring for poultry almost more than anything, but I certainly didn't start out that way. Our first batch of chicks arrived in early December of 2014, and at first, my mom was the one who truly showed enthusiasm for cleaning the brooder. I'll admit, as adorable as those five little fluffballs were, I didn't exactly relish the idea of performing poultry-related chores. But one day, my mom revealed to me that she was pregnant (big age difference between my siblings and myself, I'm aware

) and, for the baby's sake, it wasn't safe for her to be handling chicken droppings. On top of that, my dad works quite a bit, so there's no way he could ever assume coop duty after coming home tired every day. Long story short, I took care of every brood of chicks or ducklings afterwards (which I would calculate to be about 5), as well as cleaned the coop, and every bird under my care has survived. I'm amazed every day, seeing 37 lovely, healthy, friendly girls and boy whom I raised. May I confess that the number is about to rise to 47 here in March?

Oh, chicken math, I love you so!
Bali is one of the chattiest birds we have! Must be a breed trait, I guess. Now that you mention her way of beating up the roosters, that reminds me of our own situation with the late T.Roo. Mind you, he was a 9-pound bird, and I have some 3-4 pound girls as well. When he started to get a little daring and rip feathers out of the established hens' backs, he really got pummeled to a pulp.

The most legendary fight he ever engaged in was....believe it or not.....with my itty-bitty Golden Campine hen, Alex. She wouldn't stand for any of his attitude and kicked his butt! What a sight it was-a hulking rooster battling with a tiny, raging fireball 1/3 his size. Defeating him wasn't enough to suit her, so when he retreated, she chased him across the enclosure and grabbed ahold of his tail and ripped. You should have heard the little girl screaming that T.Roo emitted! I still wish I had that whole encounter on video, but I had to settle for this: my Black Australorp and White Rock attacking him.

@chickens102403 , I am so very sorry for your loss!

She knew she was loved, though.

Were they battery Leghorns? Poor things, they had their beaks trimmed. I would love more than anything to have some rescues and give them a life outside of overcrowded cages. What a liberating experience that must be. Congratulations on your adorable new additions!

Maybe you should use this as an excuse to get a few hatching eggs for your Silkie!

Just kidding, but chicken math truly is fun, isn't it?

Love your videos, that's so funny! My hens did the same thing to mine, but now he's to big and they have learned to not get out of line.

:lau Love the videos! Emma actually hasn't laid in 2 years, due to health issues, but she gets pet status and a free pass.

Thank you! Eventually T.Roo dominated almost everyone before he went to the chopping block, but there were still a few spunky girls who stayed strong. My Black Copper Marans, Marseilles, even wing-danced at him!

Awww...I'm glad you did!

Emma sounds like a real treasure. We have a few in our flock, too, who will stay even after the laying days are over.
