Thomas Tusser wrote about farming and animal husbandry in Five Hundred Points of Husbandry in the 1500's (and ALL in rhyme!).

He had this to say:

Takes some translating of course but I think the basic theme is pay attention to your roosters; if their crowing is regular, they're doing their job as protectors. If something changes, then something may be amiss and you'd better check your flock. Poultry keepers who have roosters, do I have that right?
