Thomas Tusser wrote about farming and animal husbandry in Five Hundred Points of Husbandry in the 1500's (and ALL in rhyme!).

He had this to say:

Now out of the matter this lesson I had
Concerning Cockcrowing what profit is had
Experience teacheth as true as a clock
how Winter nightes passeth by marking the Cocke.
At midnight one Cocke croweth timely, but fix
with pause to his neighbor to answer betwixt.
At three a clocke thicker, and then as ye knowe,
like all in to mattens nere day do they crowe.
At midnight, at three, and an houre ere day
cockes crow in their language, and thus they do say:

If noise ye do here, look al things be clere.

Takes some translating of course but I think the basic theme is pay attention to your roosters; if their crowing is regular, they're doing their job as protectors. If something changes, then something may be amiss and you'd better check your flock. Poultry keepers who have roosters, do I have that right?

Our first chicks come tomorrow! So excited!
