Chicken poop as fertilizer

Keep in mind that chicken manure when fresh is hot. It works best to compost it....however other applications of the manure work well applying to the gardens as a top dress all Winter long here, and keep in mind some gentle plants like green beans, will give you a burnt leave or two....if time to settle down is't given before planting....it is a great fertilizer...and the harvest will support my thoughts....go ahead and dress plants..but..keep it away of them.

Wow...this is an old thread! Can't even remember back to when I trenched chicken manure with old hay. Nowadays I compost it in the coop, having evolved in my deep litter efforts into using materials that compost more easily than pine shavings. By the time it comes out of the coop it's composted completely and perfect for side dressing or planting directly into.

maybe add some dolomite lime to balance out the acidity, mix with lots of leaves - leaves make the best compost - if you look up composting - when they refer to mixes of green and brown material - chicken poop is considered a green!

if you compost or have read up on it, chicken poop is a green when it comes to your pile. I dont make anything elaborate....Actually recently my 2.5yr old helped me expand our composting area. I found a fairly level area (I live in mountains, so I am limited) dug a small trench outlining my area and then filled with 6'sections of logs and staked in with some metal bars to hold them in place. i throw old my kitchen scraps (no meat or oils) and the chickens poop and old bedding, small sticks (i break into little pieces - large sticks save for a hugelkultur garden) I mix mine every 2-3weeks and let my little one go out there with his little shovel and stir it up anytime he wants. honestly there is no better garden soil supplement then composted leafs with composted chicken poop! Now for the best fertilizer in the world...I will let you in secret that has been shunned since the black plague, not for it's danger, but the education of the general population.....Per 1 gallon of non-chlorinated water, mix 4 cups of Wood Ash-(organic-no cigarette butts or ink or fuel. etc...) with 1 - first morning pee (do not use urine if taking medications!) and this will work better then anyother fertilizer and is sterile and safe! - In addition you can, throughout day urinate around garden and yard! Don't waste a free resource clean resource! If you do not spread it around, it can create a bad smell, this is easily corrected with a small amount of Dolomite Lime sprinkled around. The only reason this is not a common place in agriculture, is that 90% of N based fertilizers use N harvested from the petroleum industry...If we switched to urine for our agricultural needs we would "literally" piss a billion dollar industry away!

We had 2 chicken tractors in the front yard, then finally could get them to backyard where we have added 1 more tractor & 1 stationary coop. This spring I had 4 voluntary tomato plants & 1 watermelon vine growing in the spots where they were. WOW, all plants are huge & producing tomatoes & watermelon. Apparently our hens did the sowing of the seeds/planting/fertilizing & they did a wonderful job, lol. When we put them in the backyard they fertilized it themselves & now I not only have a nice veg garden but 2 wonderful honeybee gardens & they are bursting with produce & flowers for the bees. Next spring we will put the veg garden in the front & bee garden in the entire backyard. Love our chickens & honeybees!!!! Wonderful eggs & honey!!!
