what is the red called in Australia? do you show your silkies?

I don't know what the red is called over here D:
I don't show my silkies i got asked for a while if i was going to, but i just dont know

well they look nice enough to, might want to take one and get a judge to look it over and give you their opinon that way you could make a good decision, one nice thing about poultry shows is all you really need to do is get it ready and then take it to the show put it in a cage and stand back. I love to go to them and look at all the beautiful birds.

I'm sure you will enjoy it alot, I never like show girls till I saw them in person they are cool looking birds.

I had my first scrambled duck egg this morning. I liked it, didn't love it but didn't hate it.

I've been scared to eat them plain like that, but I got brave and did it. I only have one girl who started laying about 2 weeks ago, so I have been getting my first duck eggs. She lays one a day, right in the mud.

I have made her 2 or 3 different nest spots with straw and hay and she prefers the mucky mud mixed with poop places to lay her egg. I have 4 others that should start laying any week now.

Thanks for posting the link. I saw those on the North Carolina thread and wanted to ask - are those English Orps? The fluffiness is A-MAZING! I feel like the llittle girl from Despicable Me - It's so fluffy!!! My BOs ar fluffy, but not quite that fluffy! HenTymes birds demonstrate why the Orps were bred for feathers. How did she get ahold of her breeding stock, do you know?

There is a couple of BYC'er on here that have imported stock from the UK, it is possible to get hatching eggs, or started birds from these breeders.

You aren't kidding! And the ones in her pics are lavender? blue? I always loved genetics in high school, but chicken genetics is WAY more complicated than anything I remember doing there! Trying to figure out what color patters/feathering from each pairing is just

People who do project breeding are amazing!

I wondered if there was a way to get hatching eggs and such from the UK. Do started birds have to go through quarantine or if they are certified clean they can pass through? Either way, she has some pretty birds. Have you thought of getting some of hers, or do you already have some?

I'm hoping to study poultry genetics, It does sounds pretty complicated, but it would be fun, and useful to know. You can get hatching eggs, but you are talking about spending around a million dollars imported thing. I was reading on a thread on here about a BYC'er that imported some super rare birds from "over the pond" and he said he will NEVER do it again. He has a website that tells about how long it took to import them etc. A breeder friend of mine was trying to import some Jubilee Orpington eggs, but he said it was way to expensive.

Started birds would be even more stressful, and money consuming than hatching eggs. Your birds would have to stay in quarantine for awhile, and if they ended up w/ some kind of disease they would have to be destroyed. I was on one ladies website and she had spend gosh who knows how much money imported just about all the Orpington colors, but I think her birds had some kind of disease and they all had to be put down!

I tryed to hatch some of her Bantam BO eggs, but her packing wasn't all that wonderful and none hatched. She is a super nice lady, and if I had some extra money sitting around I would try her again.

I would very much like to get some birds from Joy. Check out the imported English Orpington thread on the breeds section. Your mouth will drop open at some of the birds!

That is a dilemma about the mallards, If it were me I think I would be so tempted to clip wings. If they go out in the wild you may never see them again. But on the other hand how cool would that be for them to return in the Spring (or whenever ducks "return")
