Yes, you can use chick starter, just be sure you grind it up for them until they get a little older. You may also need to give them some boiled eggs, or something high in protein.

Thanks for advice Mrs. didn't even think about here.

How are you newbies doing today? sure are pretty ones.

I have been challenged to count my flock. And PROVE that they all have names (except for the youngsters which haven't shown me their names yet). Well, humph!

They move around so much.....

But I started keeping a "Chickens" note in my iPhone, adding new names and descriptions by breed, categorized as Hens or Roosters, once I realized I hadn't listed this or that one while I'm out amongst the flock.

Named chickens: 54.
Plus 2 geese, 2 call ducks, all named. One Cayuga drake named, 3 more unnamed. 4 little Cayuga duckling girls, not yet named (except as the collective: Plieides.

And a whole slew of young chickens not yet named: five value or lavender Orpingtons, some bantams, four LF Brahmas, four Buckeye pullets, ummm.... And about 20 others from a LF pullet surprise order from MPC. (About five are named, counted in the 54.)

Still have 6 packing peanut RIR cockerels collectively referred to as The Minions, because they came with Kate, my Toulouse goose as day-olds. Gonna be going to a friend's Freezer Camp. I am keeping the RIR pullet that sneaked in there, though.

How'm I doing?

Good. Yesterday we made a small coop and run for the White Orpies, then today we made a small run for the LCOs.

A little EE chick just popped out!! I went back to my room to check on the chicks and heard peeping from the Sportsman and found a EE chick just chill'in out in his egg!!
