My only peahen died in my arms this morning..R.I.P. Sweetpea!!
hit.gif

I let my purebred flock out this evening, after Rusty was locked up in the yard of course.

The three remaing peachicks are all peacocks (of course). They free range with the purebreds. Anyway, they used to live up in the front yard until we had a bunch of storms roll in and then I put new chickens in their pen etc. Anway, they like to go to the backyard and hang out..then they drift into the front yard and try to go to bed in the 'used to be hutch'. This evening I went a hunt'in for the peacocks and found them in the back part of the backyard. At first I thought about just picking them up and carrying them to the coop, but then I thought "they'll never learn where to go at night unless I herd'em over to the coop." So I do a stupid thing ... they're too big to go through the fence so I pick them up and toss'em over the fence. The first peacock I picked up and tossed flew like an eagle to the barn and landed in a tree..which was about 150 yards from the backyard..the 2nd one followed the first peacock and landed under the tree the 1st peacock landed in. The white one didn't know where his buds went and high-tailed it to the coop like a good boy!! After I get them all locked up I go catch the 2nd peacock that had flown up on the goat pen fence and was fixing to jump in the tree with his bud...NO WAY!! I jump over the fence and grab the peacock & take him back to the coop. He starts calling to his bud in the tree as soon as I set him down. I thought maybe if I left them for awhile the peacock in the tree would here his buddy calling and would get down...well that didn't work. My 'lil 'bro climbed up on the fence and trys to shack the peacock out of the tree..that didn't work..he just climbed up in the tree. Me and my mom run to the back of the barn and grab hold of them the tree limb and start bobb'in it up and down. The peacock is really off-blanance and is trying to fly higher up in the tree so I jump up and grab the limb and then while my mom holds the limb down I'm able to grab the peacocks tail feathers and get him out of the tree. I like my three amigos..don't get me wrong..but they sure are a truck loud of trouble!

What kind of chook is she?

It's a speckled sussex. I moved the mangy cat thing into their coop. maybe if she HAS to sit, she can sit in there. They free range during the day. At least they were all little pullet eggs, not anything I would miss too much.

The bobcat killed one peahen, then sickness killed the last peahen.

Yay! Its Friday and I made it to the end of the week!! I am exhausted, either from the Strep infection or the antibiotics, and can't wait to sleep in tomorrow morning! DH is sick now, of course, so that puts a damper on the weekend, but if I can lay in bed longer than normal I'll be happy! Also, can't forget The Walking Dead starts back up this Sunday night.

Aspen, I am so sorry to hear about your peahen!
hugs.gif
I hope you get a chance to try again and can find your three boys some pretty girls. I am glad to hear no more bobcats! Are the new kids doing well in their new coops? Any pics of button quail chicks??

At last count only 5 quail and we have given up on the others as hatch day was the 11th. Guess the power outage over the weekend had a more serious effect than we had hoped for. Unfortunately the cute little guy we helped hatch did not make it through the night. There was something wrong with his legs - maybe a development issue caused by temp problems?? The 5 survivors are going strong and are so cute!

DH said no quail so they are going to the FFA class for breeding purposes. So, maybe in the future...

Sorry bout ur peahen just got done cleanin coop just a curious question but how many times do u guys clean ur coop a year

Just did my cleaning. I do it twice a year, once around now and once after we start thawing out in spring. My pine shavings look almost clean after six months, I was amazed. The DE and Sweet PDZ really does work.
