most chicks feather out by around 6 weeks or so and will be off the light by then. As someone else pointed out they start to lay around 6 months. They are most productive those first few seasons, so don't buy older hens (the feed:egg ratio will not be optimal). You will have to have housing (although for 4 chickens you will only need a small coop and a run), buy bedding for them once in a while, and something for them to eat and drink out of. Remember to put on the other side: eggs, bug reduction, lawn aeration, fertilizer, therapy, and entertainment.
