I wouldn't worry too much about the color of the tote, and I would definitely use a brooder plate instead of a heat lamp. Also, I would get them outside as soon as the coop is finished. Good luck, and have fun with them.

Welcome here this is a great place for advice. Sounds like a nice mix of chicks. I would brood outside also. Brooding in coop keeps dust and helps them learn that coop is their safe place. If you don't have electricity than only keep them in brooder till feathered color doesn't matter.
Heat lamps are cheap but very dangerous. I broke down and bought a plate heater for my future chicks. Good luck

Welcome. I use these for my baby chicks (below link). I love their ventilation, how easy they are to clean (and that they get clean), they are so inexpensive that I throw it away after they go in to the coop, and you can zip the bottom off when you want. However, this only works if they are away from other chickens because the top is not hard and will collapse if a chicken jumps on the top. For heat I used a radiant panel heater. I will also give you the link. Anything that takes a fire worry away was my choice. And like others have said - you need to have plenty of space for them to be able to get away from the heat.

Thank you I actually looked at these and have one left over from when my puppy was small
I did get a heat pad to I was worried bout fire risk with the lamp so I got the heater !

My only concern with this is how do you hold the heat in ? They don’t close so the screen windows allow the cooler air in ?

I was told they have to be in heated area for at least 6 weeks or until fully feathered?

Mine are fully off heat at 4 weeks old. What's the temperature where you are?
