***chicken Questions***

I have a couple of questions/concerns:

1. Very confused about winter heating. Some do - some don't. I live in upstate NY where it can get very cold with a lot of snow (lake effect). Some experts on this forum don't believe in heating because they think the chickens will get used to the cold. And others, put heaters, heat lamps, radiators etc. in their coops.

q. Should I heat the coop or not?

2. I work 2nd shift. Leave for work around 1:30 pm & get home 11:30pm. The girls coop is 4' x 4' & 7' tall. I have 4 13 wk RIRs. In the cold winter months, should I close their pop door before I go to work or after? They have a very secure (but small 4x4) run.

I've already become addicted to this forum and read as much as I can regarding winter, but sometimes too much info gets me a little (I mean a lot) confused.

Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

Hello Louieandthecrew,

I have questions!

How many hours a day do you handle your birds to show them?

What do you feed bantams?

How old should a fowl be to show it?

Do you keep in to wing bands when you show or take them out?

thank you

tallyho - It's just so addicting!

Tdub4chiks - 1. I would say that you should heat your coop. If the hotter chickens get hot then they'll go outside. OR, if your chickens are close, then you can lose the heat lamp and they'll cuddle together for warmth.
2. I would close the door AFTER you get home so that, if they get cold while you're away, they can go INSIDE and warm up.

cray4en - I actually haven't showed any of my banties yet but,
1. I feed them regular feed (Don't know the exact name at the moment)
2. I would wait 'til your birds are roughly six or seven mounths old to show. That gives them time to grow and get all of thier adult feathers in.
3. It shouldn't take very long to fix up your chickens before showing them. Just give them a little bath, let their feathers AIR dry in a CLEAN room, and make sure they are very well fed. (Some people paint their hens nails

)
4. I don't use any wing bands or anything because I haven't showed mine yet but, I, personally, would use a leg band. They just clip right on!

Hope that helped!

That depends on the breed that you planing to show..

What do you feed bantams?

You can feed bantams the same as Large Fowl breeds.

How old should a fowl be to show it?

Your bird will need to be at least 6 months or 1/2 grown.

Do you keep in to wing bands when you show or take them out?

Once you put in the wing band you can leave it in you will not have to remove it for a show.
