Chicken Quilt Block Swap---BLOCKS ARE IN THE MAIL!!!

Hi, just snagged 3 yards of cream calico on sale at joanne's, incase anyone is shopping they've a 30% off sale going on.

how is everyone's blocks coming along? I finally have my first one cut and laid out. Haven't ironed it to the background yet. Do you just eyeball it to get it in the center of the background? I made sure all parts are at least an inch from the edge. I am nervous about that step since i can't undo it! I would take a pic but the camera is out for repairs.

*edited to add:

I thought of another thing: Is it okay that all the blocks I make will have different fabrics? I assume its ok but just thought I would ask!

I was wondering the same thing Tabby. I have six of them cut out and one layed out but not sewn on yet. I'm a little nervous to actually do the applique' part. I tend to have a heavy foot when I sew, and I need to be more patient so it doesn't come out sloppy.

My first six are the same, but I want to do different ones on the next batch.

There are several different methods to center the appliques. You can use a special appliques sheet that will allow you to iron all the pieces together then it can be lifted off the sheet in one unit to iron on your background square, or you can make a clear plastic template (the plastic that is used to cover written reports for work or school works well.) Trace your design on the clear plastic and use it to position your pieces on the background square. I normally slightly crease my background square to give me a visually reference point to center the design.

I have one large "center" piece on mine, so what i'm doing is measuring my block and putting a tiny pencil "x" dead center (it'll be under the applique), then from there each piece can me centered off the X for placement. (example the beak is 2.25 inches from the x), after measuring out the first few you'll have the placements down.

Ya'll are more precise than me. If it looks like the center I just slap in on down and get to stitching. I'm a lead foot too. I've got to be careful when on curves and corners. Mine are going to be all different colors.

CoyoteMagic, you are my kind of girl! Each one of mine will have a slightly different personality 'cause I eyeball also. I'm trying to talk my sister-in-law (the diva of glue-on applique) into joining us. She is in SC and is so proud of me. I never ever use glue and traditionaly do needle-turn applique. I used my stash except for the 12 1/2" blocks. I have 11 chickens of one fabric and 13 of the other. By the way, I purchased 3 yards of the background, washed and dryed that and barely had enough for all 24 blocks. Might want to buy a quarter yard more or have a friendly relationship with the lady doing the cutting.

I also could not resist the rooster crowing in the sun. I put that on the back of a shirt. I'm ready for the next chicken swap!

Phew! Thank goodness I got to the last two posts...I'm a winger as well and was getting worried I'd have to withdraw and make up some fancy excuse other than, "Center it???"

I'm still in the process of tracing parts. I think I"ll make 5 or 10 at once to see how it goes during an upcoming school vacation.

The Derby Car quilt is not finished but has given me some good practice! Plus I learned that you can not do raffles in Boy Scouts so now I'm not sure what to do with it when I do finish it. My son will probably love it all to himself!

Hope everyone is well!
