Chicken referees

Why do chickens (certain ones) seem to be johnny on the spot when a fight breaks out, performing a good stinkeye/standoff routine? This seems to be for nipping the fight in the bud! Is there a specific reason some feel the need to be the Sherriff of the coop or run? I actually think it's kinda funny, in a Jimmy Stewart/John Wayne sorta way

My rooster always breaks up the fights between the hens. It's part of his job.
