There have been other post that have warned people to be cautious of
chickens around your face. Tonight I had a close call that I am still shaken
up by.

This is not the first time so let me give a brief history:
1-When our current laying flock were 10 weeks one poked my wife in
the eye. Her eye healed but was irritated for several days.
2-A 13 week old bird got our dog in the eye. He was OK. Some may
recall my "Chicken attacks Pit Bull post".
3-My leghorn has nipped me in the lip. One time she got me so hard
in bled and was fat for a few days.

Tonight, while feeding my babies in the barn on the old couch out there,
my extremely friend Leghorn jumped up on the back of the couch. The
birds were in a feeding frenzy devouring oatmeal, one of their favorites.
I turned my head to the left and the leghorn, seeing the gleam in my eye,
struck my eye hard. Her lover beak raked my lower eye lid and her upper
beak ripped my contact lens right off my eye. It hurt bad and I had that
"Oh ****, this may be bad" feeling. My contact lens probably saved my
eye from a surface scratch or worse. The chicken didn't know what she was
doing. She is a sweet bird.

Please be careful everyone. I lucked out tonight and feel like puking right
now. This could have been bad.

Glad it wasn't worse! I have a couple of hens who love to sit on my shoulder. I'm always conscious of them being so close to my eye. My goofy RIR, Rosemary, loves nothing better than to fly up to my shoulder and doesn't necessarily give any warning. She's knocked my glasses off before doing that, the spoiled thing, and she doesn't mean any harm, just wants to be babied.

There's something about debeaked birds (not something I promote at all, mine just came that way) that I don't mind at all. They don't "peck" normally, so I don't have that problem. Good thing it wasn't that serious.

I like your puking up the chicken smiley. ( uh frowny?)

Oh my!! Im glad for the most part, you are ok. I had a "friendly hen" get me in the eye this past summer. Like your wife, it was sore for days! Now...when I hold them, I wear my sunglasses....just in case!

I am so glad you are ok, I wear glasses and still lean away when they start looking at my eyes. But it isn't always possible when they do a sneak attack...again, glad you are ok.

As usual I knew ya all would understand this.

Having our babies on our shoulders or, in my case, barn couch,
is a nice part of having chickens.

I'm gonna hang a welding mask on the barn door.

The guilty leghorn is a curious and poky one but she lays BIG white
eggs and is so lubable. Usually I'd wanna eat a chicken for this but
it was MY fault this happened.

Next time someone tells me I have nice eyes I'll say "U aint kiddin"

Now THAT story was a legit reason to be careful of an animal and eyes.... much better than the reason my mom used to give me for not letting me have a cat - that they would just scratch your eyes out with no warning.

Of course this was the same mom who wouldn't let me have kool aid because "that was what killed all those people in Jonestown"

Glad to hear your eye is OK. Maybe you should get a pair of those super sexy goggles that we had to wear in high school chemistry to protect your eyes from future feeding frenzy attacks!
