Chicken Run and Rain

I find raising the run is thhe best way to decrease mud...

In my coop, I put my grass clippings and a bunch of mulch/dirt in the center of my run. I spread it around to make a small plateau/berm. The high ground not only prevents the water running toward the run, but also lets water run off rather than soak into mud.

This Shape: ___/^^^^\___
The run walls being wire, the water runs through and away.

Alternate options include roofing, painters 6mil plastic, tarps, and other barriers.

Any suggestions on keeping the chicken run from getting muddy. It rains a lot here in Washington and it rains sideways. I have placed a roof on run, but it rains sideways often due to wind, and still gets muddy. I'm just looking for some ideas I haven't thought of. Thanks
Sand, sand and more sand. I'll explain

Mud and wet dirt harbors all kinds of ugly thingies that chickens will do better if they are not exposed to them.
X2. A cesspool of bacteria. Rather than fight the inevitable rain and subsequent mud, increase drainage.

^^^ yeppers, but if you'll add several inches of gravel then sand to make an elevated "pad" substrate below the clippings etc, the water will wick away from the run. Best of luck!
