Chicken run floor

One philosophy of run bedding is to make it resemble the forest floor that is a chicken's natural habitat.

I'm not sure that I embrace that as a philosophy, but my little in-town flock loved nothing more than to be given a fresh layer of leaves, pine straw, and shavings to dig in.

I was thinking about planting some grass seed in the run too in a small area and then I have a different section with the diatomaceous earth stuff. If I plant grass seEd and let it grow a bit will they kill the grass by eating the seeds? Lol

They would eat it before it has a chance to even get started.

Unless the run is extremely large they will kill every bit of green stuff in it and dig up the roots.

They'll even dig up stuff they won't eat, and leave the sprouts lying around to mock you.
