chicken run flooring - Beginning coop plans

Welcome :welcome Nice to have you here! I have dirt in the run, once or twice a year I may shovel a bit out if needed. I put thick layer of dry leaves in every fall. I did add some sand once and drainage isn’t an issue at this point. I have a solid roof though and in case of heavy rains I keep a wooden pallet around to be able to keep the chickens out of mud

Sometimes when I move or install a pen in a new place, I cover it with something temporary to see how it and the path around it reacts to rain. I used to use tarps for this, but tarps are a lot flimsier than they used to be. I got tired of picking up little pieces of plastic worn off the tarps, and also tired of worrying about whether the chickens and ducks will eat the tarp bits.

Now I use clear vinyl, the kind you can buy by the foot or by the roll at the fabric store, for clear covers, and burlap bags or cotton canvas under the vinyl for shade. You have to tie or weight these down if it gets windy, and also watch to make sure that snow load or water puddles don't build up on them. If your roof is pitched enough you won't have to worry about puddles or snow.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I'm a fan of a solid roof run and the run being built fully secure. Like this.
