I was thinking, would it make sense to stick a large metal finned structure underground attached to a metal pole that is then attached to a large metal plate above ground? The metal fins underground would contact the cooler soil and conduct heat away from a chicken sitting on it. Basically a massive passive heatsink cooler.

I would not think so. If the sun can hit it, the above ground metal would heat up more than the underground part would cool it. You'd wind up radiating heat instead of offering cooling.

Sounds awfully complicated....and ineffective as RR has pointed out.
Deep all day shade is best for 'cool ground'.

Where in this world are you located?

No deep all day shade here , so...
I give a dose of Sav-a-Chick electrolytes/vitamins about once a week during heat waves. It really seems to help....started this after they saved a heat stroked hen once.

BIG(9x14x2") chunks of ice last all day for wading, sitting, and sipping.

Thanks for the input. I was just curious if it would work. I live in Southern California and the heat is just getting started. I'll remember the electrolytes.
Add to your profile, please ;).
If you live in a low humidity climate, misters may be another option.

A trick I've used in hot dry weather is to wet the ground in the shade so evaporation cools it. It's not going to stay wet long enough to cause a problem and they seem to like dust-bathing in it.
