My chicken run is built over my existing lawn. Is grass alright to have in it or do I need to put something over it, i.e sand?

Thanks.

Your chickens will greatl enjoy the grass, until they kill it all off!

When they do that, you can put shredded trees, leaves, grass clippings, in for a deep litter. Or you can use sand. (Others use sand and love it. I do the compostable stuff) The worst thing you can do is let them strip the vegetation, then leave them on bare soil which will alternately be a dust bowl or mud pit, and be an open invite to pathogens. Enjoy your chickens, and consider their run as a wonderful opportunity to create some fantastic compost/mulch for your yard, while giving your girls a very important job to do.
